DescriptionGraham Farish N 374-043 BR Mk1 BG Full Brake 'Laboratory 23' RTC Livery Weathered
This model is in the Railway Technical Centre's red & blue livery - allowing N scale modellers to create an authentic test train as seen across the British railway network during the 1980s.
The Railway Technical Centre (RTC) was established by British Rail at Derby in the early 1960s to undertake Research and Development, part of which required the use of various test trains. In 1975, with the rundown of the Class 24 fleet by BR, the RTC took the opportunity to acquire a Locomotive which could be dedicated to test train work and so No. 24061 was sent to the RTC and given a departmental number (RDB968007) whilst still carrying its BR blue livery. Following works attention at Doncaster in 1980 it received the new RTC red and blue livery, received the number 97201 and was named 'Experiment' to reflect its role with the RTC.
The RTC test trains were formed of many different coaches with several of these having been converted to carry out specific roles. Laboratory 23 was a former BR MK1 BG which was converted to act as a generator vehicle to provide electrical power supplies for other RTC vehicles - such as Laboratory 12 which itself was a former BR MK1 BSK used as an acoustics test vehicle.
The models of 'Experiment' (372-980), Laboratory 23 (374-043) and Laboratory 12 (374-195) all carry an authentic weathered finish.
