These non-corridor, non-gangwayed coaches were built between 1903 and 1910 by the Midland Railway. They were used as close-coupled sets for suburban services in the Manchester and Birmingham areas, remaining in service until the early 1950s.
Note that kit 711 is also suitable to make a composite coach with four 1st and three 3rd compartments. In practice, third class compartments were made smaller by reducing the distance between the partitions, thereby narrowing the legroom between the seats. This 1st class compartments were 6’9" across and 3rd class were only 5’11".
