The Class 108 diesel multiple units were built by British Railways at Derby Works from 1958 to 1961, with a final production quantity of 333 vehicles. They were delivered as 147 two-car units, 5 three-car units and 6 four-car units. The final 29 sets (produced 1960 to 1961) differed from the earlier units by having a 4-digit headcode box on the front of the roof above the cab windows. The earlier units had 2-digit headcode boxes below the cab windows.

These units saw widespread use on the London Midland and North Eastern Regions and stayed in regular service until 1990, when they began to be withdrawn from traffic. They were replaced on regional services by the new 'Sprinter' derivative units, or by 'Turbo' units on services around London. The final units lasted in traffic until October 1993, although many saw further use in departmental service, as sandite or route-learner units. Good condition and lack of asbestos has ensured that many of this class have been saved for preservation. Over 50 vehicles have passed into preservation for use on Heritage Railways.

Digital DCC Ready - locomotive has a 8 Pin Decoder Socket to accept locomotive decoder (not included). Locomotive is suitable for traditional DC operation.
